Wordpress Categories, Basic Content Organization
Welcome to this tutorial! In this exercise we are going to take a look at how to categorize the posts that are entered into your Wordpress blog. You may ask yourself... Do I need to categorize blog posts? The answer is yes! Categorizing information will make it easier for your visitors to find the information they are looking for. Let's get started and take a look at how Wordpress allows us to categorize information.
Step 1, Default Category
The first thing... let's take a look at the front of our website / blog. On the right hand side is a column with a few different content areas. One of the areas is called "Categories." This is what we are updating in this tutorial. As you can see in the example below... Wordpress provides the default category of "Uncategorized."
Step 2, Manage Your Post
Next, login to your Wordpress administration area. On the left hand column... find the link titled "Posts." This will bring up a list of blog posts on your site. Choose to edit the post. Once inside the post... look at the right hand side of the page. There is a section titled Categories. All we need to do is add relevant categories to our blog. This will make the categorizing process possible.
Step 3, Add a Category
At this point.... all you need to do is enter the name of your first category. In the image below, we entered "Gear," so enter something relevant to your topic. Go ahead and click "Add New Category," to save the entry.
Step 4, Add a Sub-Category
This step is optional. With Wordpress you have the ability to add sub-categories. This can be very helpful to the organization of content on your blog. In this example we added "Jackets" as a sub-category to the main category of "Gear".
Step 5, Deleting a Category
If you would like to remove a category or re-organize how the categories are structured, there is a link on the left hand column titled "Categories". Clicking this will display a list of all the categories on your blog. Placing the mouse over a catebory name will bring up the options for each category. To remove an entry... just click "Delete". This will remove the category from your site.
Step 6, How a Category is Displayed
Once you have added a few categories to your blog and assigned those categories to a specific post... the categories will be displayed on the blog. Visitors will be able to sort information.
