When to Start a Website

When to Start a Website

I was recently talking with a friend who owns a small woodworking business.  He has a woodworking shop and makes an assortment of handmade items. He asked about building a website and specifically, when should he start the process.  My advice was to start immediately.  As we talked about his business, he showed some hesitation to the idea of starting right away.  He asked about pricing, and I could see his eyes start to widen.  Instead of promoting the idea of an expensive website, I gave him some alternatives.  The idea is to just start.  Start with something free like tumblr, or get a free blog on Wordpress.com.  Do not pay someone like me to build anything.  He just didn't need it.

The advice I gave him had two messages:
  • Write down and organize your thoughts.
  • Start today.
Actually, I tell this same thing to lots of people thinking about starting a website.  The fact is... the sooner something is published on the internet, the sooner it will be indexed by the major search engines.  Use time to your advantage, start today.  Who cares what platform your thoughts are published one.  Technically, things can be moved around later.  For now, the thoughts inside your head need to be categorized and presented in electronic format.  The act of writing will help in the process.

So, in a nutshell, if your business is woodworking, skateboarding, selling tee shirts, baking cookies.... my message is the same regardless of the industry.  Start today and write down your thoughts.
