Sign Up for a Hosting Solution
Now its time to find a place to host your blog. For over 5 years I have been using a hosting service called A2 Hosting. A2 has been great, so I have no problem recommending their service, (I actually host many web clients here also.) This tutorial walks you through the signup process at A2, so let's go ahead and dive right in!
Step 1
First, fire up a browser and head over to A2 Hosting. Once there, you will notice the variety of products and services has to offer. For this tutorial, we are using shared hosting. So let's stick with the "Web Hosting" solution. You can either click on the "Web Hosting" menu button, or the "Learn More" button...a blue arrow has been added to show where to click. Once clicked, you will be taken to the product detail page.
Step 2
Here we are at the Web Hosting product page. We are going to continue through this step, but there is one thing to note here. Please do not be surprised by the pricing they advertise. It says "5.99 a month," but this is only applies if you purchase a multi year contract. In this tutorial, we are only using a month to month contract, so the price is going to be higher. Almost all the hosting companies have similar pricing structures. Let's click the "Order Now" button and move on to the next step.
Step 3
Now we are entering the sign up process for A2 Hosting. The first thing we are asked, is to tell 2 how we are going to manage our domain. In this tutorial, the domain we are using is already registered with GoDaddy.com. we just need to select option 3 "I will use my existing domain and update my nameservers." The reason for choosing this option, is we should always keep the domain registrar and hosting service separate. This is a good practice to follow and future articles will be written on this topic.
Step 4
There are a few options on this page. The first is the billing cycle. In this tutorial we are choosing the month to month option. You can defintely save money by purchasing a longer contract. If you are just starting a blog for the first time, I would recommend the month to month option to start. Also on this page is the SSL option... leave this blank. The last option is to auto install an application. We leave this blank as we will install Wordpress manually in a future tutorial.
Step 5
Here we have the payment details page. Just fill out all the required information and click "Complete Order" when finished. Make sure to write down your username and password for future reference.
Step 6
Here we are at the last step! The order has been placed with A2 and you are now on your way to building your first blog.
